COMPLETE AND PARTIAL DENTURES

When is a Denture recommended?

  • When you have lost all of your teeth in your upper or lower jaw.
  • When you have lost several teeth in your upper or lower jaw.
  • When you want to enhance your smile and facial tissues.
  • When you want to improve your chewing, speech, and digestion.

What is a Denture?

There are three types of dentures – complete/full, partial, or precision partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth in an arch are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from moving, which can cause future problems. A precision partial denture is a partial that has attachments that fit into the back side of a crown. It eliminates the metal 'hook of a traditional partial denture.

Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years. Still they may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear.

If a Denture is recommended for me, what is the process?

The process of creating dentures requires several appointments, usually over several weeks. Impressions and measurements are taken and used to make your custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments may be necessary to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. When your denture is fabricated, your dentist will precisely adjust it, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.

You may experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty, this is normal. This will subside as you become accustomed to your new dentures. Proper cleaning of your new dental appliance, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits will allow you to extend the life of your new dentures.
