FIXED BRIDGES

When is a Bridge recommended?

  • When you want to replace one or more missing teeth and there are teeth on either side of the space.
  • To prevent other teeth from moving or shifting out of position.
  • To help restore chewing and speaking ability.
  • To restore a smile.
  • To change from a removable appliance or denture to something more secure.

What is a Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance that is used to replace missing teeth.

The most common type of bridge consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) and are attached to pontics (artificial teeth), filling in the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years.

If a Bridge is recommended for me, what is the process?

Getting a bridge usually requires two, and sometimes more, visits. While the teeth are numb, the two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of enamel to allow for a crown. Next, an impression is taken and sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge will be fabricated. A provisional (temporary) bridge will be made for the patient to wear until your next appointment, usually two to three weeks later.

At the second visit, your fixed bridge will be cemented.

Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new fixed bridge.
